Early Repayment Charges
Lifetime mortgages are designed to run for life, but you can repay early if you wish or you come into money.
If you do, there might be a charge. Two main types exist:
- Fixed charge - a set percentage for a few years, which means charges can be predicted accurately.
- Gilt-linked charge - based on movements in Government bond prices. The charges are less certain and unpredictable.
There is no penalty charge if you repay the loan due to moving into long term care or move in with family who care for you. There is also no charge after death.
For joint borrowers, there is usually a period - often 3 years - during which the surviving partner can repay the loan or sell the property without a penalty.
Today’s products are much clearer about these rules, so you’ll always know where you stand.
